Vitality in the architectonic environment
Eyer, David ; Horáček, Martin (referee) ; Hudec, Mojmír (referee) ; Kyselka, Mojmír (referee) ; Žabičková, Ivana (advisor)
More and more research studies are being conducted on the quality of architectural space as a factor affecting our mental, social and physical health. In the past, this topic was often overlooked in its complexity. The establishment of the specialized fields of building biology, biophilic architecture and the works of Christopher Alexander and Nikos Salingaros now allow us to consider various facets of this subject. This dissertation aims to analyse the topic of vitality in architectural space by studying the abilities and perceptions of its users. Therefore its aim is not to develop a new theory of “vitality-enhancing architectural space”, but to describe how this phenomenon is perceived by the users themselves. Users can provide feedback on which features of architectural space they see as the most important for the feeling of vitality. These features have been hierarchically organized based on their perceived importance, analysed and described in detail to allow their relatively easy application in practice. This dissertation will also allow a comparison with other existing works on the studied topic.
The donkey - a livestock or a pet? (Breeding and use of donkeys in Polabí lowland - a case study)
Diblíčková, Eliška ; Bartoš, Michael (advisor) ; Veverková, Zuzana (referee)
Donkeys have been useful helpers to people especially at transporting burdens and in agriculture for thousands of years. Nowadays they make livelihoods of rural as well as urban inhabitants over all continents easier. The use of donkeys in agriculture and transport is vanishing in developing countries due to the mechanization. We know only little about how and why people keep breeding of donkeys in developing countries. Theoretical part of the thesis tries to summarize previous basic knowledge about breeding and using donkeys. It focuses on domestication of donkeys, their use in history in different parts of the world, current position of donkeys and partly on relations between men and animals from the view of Human-Animal Studies. A research in a part of Polabí lowland is added. The main practical aim of the thesis is to take a look at the phenomenon of breeding donkeys in the Czech Republic in the present and bring any findings about why do people breed donkeys in modern times in this developing country. Research finds how are donkeys bred, what reasons lead breeders to get donkeys and what their real use is. The thesis contributes to popularization of this theme among experts and laymen and suggests methodology for research of breeding donkeys in other areas as well.
The effect of photographs of primary and secondary forest environments on human mood and cognitive performance
Arnot, Tomáš ; Hůla, Martin (advisor) ; Grygarová, Dominika (referee)
We are currently witnessing a growing trend of people moving to larger cities. People are less in touch with nature than before and recent research shows that this is a problem. In this thesis, we summarise the findings of studies that have been carried out and proved the positive effect of the natural environment on human psychology and physiology. Our work focuses on the effect of mood and cognitive enhancement due to exposure to a stimulus. The research was conducted remotely through questionnaires. We exposed respondents (N=600) to photographs of four types of forest environments and examined the difference in scores using standardized methods of STROOP and POMS-SF tests. When formulating the design of our study, we drew inspiration from already conducted research. The original feature of our approach rested in distinguishing forest environments into deciduous and coniferous types, or primary and secondary types. We asked respondents how they liked the outdoor environment to which they had previously been exposed. This allowed us to determine whether the effect of the stimulus on mood and cognition was related to liking when evaluating the results. The findings of the thesis suggest that all types of forest environments have an effect on mood when compared to the city as a control stimulus....

Barvová, Dana
This diploma thesis aims to disclose the basic affect of plant use in regard to their influence on humans, especially their psychological impact on the overall health of the idividual. In the introduction is described the basic aspects of plant use in this area, as well as different aspects of plant use in interiors and exteriors of buildings. Literary research focuses on the various effects of indoor and outdoor plants. At the beginning, the biophilia hypothesis described the common understanding of all living organisms in the ground. In the field of indoor plants, human health is divided in terms of how plants affect air quality in the interior, and the harmful substances influencing air quality. This is important for the potential use of plants to prevent Sick Building disease syndrome. SBS is a set of symptoms that are associated with modern industrialized societies as a result of staying in buildings with unhealthy air. These symptoms can be caused by different chemical, physical and biological conditions inside the building. Indoor plants also have other various uses in different areas of human health; their ability to improve the atmosphere, whether it is by enriched air, by oxygen and carbon dioxide, but also by their aesthetic effect and in regards to influencing the mental state of the individual. Garden plants are divided according to the preference of the individual, as indoor plants plants naturally affect the senses, the basic species, the possibilities of plant usage in therapy, the use of plants in gardens for the handicapped, as well as in the use of garden work in occupational therapy for mentally ill individuals . Within the framework of this thesis, a study of the potential effects of plants on the psychological health of patients in the psychiatric ward is proposed, especially with regards to the influence of mood and anxiety. Two scalar systems were used in experimental psychiatry to evaluate the outcomes. The dissertation discusses the possible effect of the test results and other factors besides the effects of the plants. The conclusion is devoted to the overall assessment of the possibilities of using plants in the field of therapy.
